School policy checked 11 August 2026

Check the school rule before buying a laptop for 2027

Victorian government primary schools (F–6): from 2027, schools must not invite or allow families to buy or bring their own student digital device for use at school, apart from stated exceptions and transition arrangements. An existing BYO device used before 2027 may continue at the school's discretion until replacement is needed.

Victorian government secondary schools: BYOD can continue. Under the current Department of Education policy, a single common device must cost no more than $980 including GST, or a device list/minimum-spec pathway must include an option that can be met at or below that base-device threshold. The Department reviews the threshold annually. The school's own device list or minimum specifications remain the final requirement.

Before spending money, get the current device sheet from the school. Read the current Victorian Department of Education guidance.

10-point pre-purchase check

What to check before buying a used or refurbished school laptop

  1. School requirement: get the school's current device list or minimum specifications first.
  2. Supported operating system: confirm the laptop has a current supported update path. Ordinary Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025, so a Windows 10-only device is not a future-ready school purchase.
  3. Battery condition: ask for battery health/cycle information where available and test whether it holds charge.
  4. Memory and storage: make sure RAM and free storage suit the student's actual browser, Office, video-call and school-app workload.
  5. Screen and hinges: check for pressure marks, flicker, cracks, loose hinges and lid damage.
  6. Keyboard, trackpad and ports: test every key, charging port, USB port, audio and camera/microphone needed for school.
  7. Charger: confirm the correct safe charger is included and charges reliably.
  8. Locks and management: confirm there is no activation lock, unknown BIOS password or previous organisation/school management preventing normal setup.
  9. Seller and protections: identify whether you are buying from a business or a one-off private seller, because consumer protections differ.
  10. Setup and data: allow for updates, school accounts, backup, security and moving files from the old device.
Software support

Do not buy a laptop that is already stranded on unsupported software

Microsoft ended ordinary Windows 10 support on 14 October 2025. For a Windows school laptop, check Windows 11/current support compatibility and the school's own requirements. School-managed devices can have different arrangements.

Buying rights

Business seller and private seller are not the same

Second-hand goods sold by an Australian business can be covered by automatic consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law. Most consumer guarantees do not apply to a genuine one-off private sale, although some title protections still apply. A written warranty is extra; it does not replace rights that already apply.
